Will this Wrapping Station Work for You? #4

PixiesDidIt!™ believes that organizational solutions should be EASY and ATTRACTIVE. As professional organizers and personality type experts, we can tell you which solutions will be easy and work for you.

We use the most popular personality assessment in the world, Myers Briggs, and for home organization, we break it down into four major groups, The Realistic Decision Maker (SJ), the The Adaptable Realist (SP), The Visionary Decision Maker (NJ), and the Adaptable Innovator (NP).

This photo is from Real Simple Magazine by way of Apartment Therapy and both are great resources for organizational ideas.

Will this Work for an SJ, The Realistic Decision Maker?
Yes, it will. It has an attractive (you can barely see it in this photo) wicker basket holding all the rolls of papers, a see-through shoe organizer being re-purposed as a container for all gift wrapping accessories (oh how SJ's love new uses for old things also a Real Simple staple.) There's also the pant hangers being used to hold tissue paper, gift bags, and recycled wrapping paper that has been saved, smoothed down and folded...yes an easy place to put the paper you have reused! So thrifty! This solution will also appeal to the crafty side of the SJ because there's a good chance they have all the materials needed to create this wrapping station stored in their basement or storage facility. SJ's notoriously hold onto things that might come in handy some day. The only trouble is that they sometimes don't see or know why something is aesthetically pleasing. This solution looks good because it is color coordinated. The orange tissue papers are grouped together, also blues, greens, etc. Remember to organize by color not by type with this visual solution and it will always look nice when you open the closet door.

Will this Work for an SP, The Adaptable Realist?
Maybe. While SJ's are the bare bones practical S's, the SP's are the ones who love beauty, adventure, and all things sensual. And this solution is all those things. But when it comes to maintaining this beauty? Well, they'd rather be out their experiencing it than keeping it together. This solution has the practicality that an SP would admire, all the ingenious uses for old things, but they would have trouble keeping it up. They always mean to keep the wrapping paper at the party, but then get caught up in the moment and it ends up in the trash. So, they would appreciate the beauty of this thrifty solution but would in the end, have trouble maintaining it.

Will this Work for an NJ, The Visionary Decision Maker?
Another maybe. It has all the requisite visual elements, the paper and bags hanging like clothes, all the rolls easy to see and retrieve from the wicker basket. Even the shoe organizer would appeal to the NJ, but if it's hanging in a closet like the rest of the items, then having to take it in and out would be a step that an NJ would quickly tire of doing. She likes things to be out in the open and unless she was raised by an SJ, it might be the last straw.

Will this work for an NP, The Adaptable Innovator?
An NP would want it to work. She tends to admire the clever ideas of an SJ, but her follow through is even worse than the SP. In the end, having to keep all those bags and paper clipped onto the skirt hangers, or the tissue paper draped over the slack hangers would probably get annoying. Its hard enough to put her skirts and pants back on those things!

Recap
This is really the most ideal wrapping station solution for the SJ. Although she might like a set of drawers for all the details instead of the shoe organizer, the thrift in her would be fine with whatever she had on hand. (If that was a set of drawers instead of the shoe organizer, then so be it.) This solution would appeal to an SP, but she wouldn't have the wherewithall to keep it up. An NJ would like its visual element, but would tire of always having to take it out and put it back in the closet. An NP would love the idea but in the end would stop hanging everything up and would also dislike having to take everything in and out of the closet.

Next Up?
We define the personality types. And yes, we probably should have done this first, but I am an Adaptable Innovator, so I was innovating. Now that the Realistic Decision Maker is getting in on the action, we are getting down to business.

Will this Wrapping Station Work for You? #3

At PixiesDidIt! we believe that organizational solutions should be EASY and ATTRACTIVE. As organization experts and practitioners of the most popular personality assessment in the world — Myers Briggs — we can tell you which solutions will be easy and work for your personality type.

When it comes to home organization, we break the 16 Myers Briggs personality types into four major groups, SJ, SP, NJ and NP. This solution can work for all four types, but its works better for some more than others.

These photos and link are from Organize Magazine, which was a great source for solutions, but unfortunately has gone under. Right now they still have content on the web, but we'll find something similar if they take it off.

Will this Work for an SJ, The Realistic Decision Maker?
Pretty much any organization solution could work for an SJ because they are naturally gifted at keeping and putting things back in their place. Plus an SJ probably has both a shoe organizer and wastebasket stored somewhere for "just in case." Over the door organizers are one of the easiest solutions for any type, no drilling required, however the metal hooks do look ugly and can hamper the closing of the door. Since SJ's can often forgo beauty for function, they might not go the extra mile required and screw this organizer firmly to the door. There also isn't a solution here for all the smoothed down wrapping paper they most likely have saved. If you have or buy a clear shoe organizer, make sure that each row has its own color scheme — it's what make this solution pretty. If you use a regular one, just make sure to use labels, preferably the matching attractive tags you would use on a gift.

Will this Work for an SP, the Adaptable Realist?
SP's are usually true to their name. If they think a solution looks good, then they can adapt and let it work for them. They are detail oriented and would both love and notice that each row of the shoe organizers holds complementary colors. The wastebasket of paper rolls is as easy to take in and out of a closet as it is to take out and put back the paper rolls in the wastebasket. Pretty and easy! Their organization weakness is the follow through, however, so this shoe organizer might remain over the door for quite some time which would ultimately irk them more than any other type.

Will this Work for an NJ, the Visionary Decision Maker?
Sure this idea would work for an NJ — its visual, they can easily see what they have and easily put things away when they were done with it. But like the SJ, perhaps even more so, they don't see why the beautiful details are so important to this solution. But they are. The fact that each row has complimentary colors in each row is key, but we fear that maintaining this detail would annoy an NJ and eventually it would look very cluttered and stuffed.

Will this Work for an NP, the Adaptable Innovator?
Yes, even though the beauty of this solution is in the maintenance of the details, usually better left to the SP's of the world, this solution is just too easy to mess up. Besides, where SP's revel in the beauty of detail, NP's excel in the big picture. If they see this as a big sunset to create, meaning they like the way it looks, there will be no problems. It has to be on the back of a door (ie. not tucked away inside a closet...that would be too annoying to an NP who dislikes having to take two step to put things away. One is enough, and if they had to take the organizer off a hanger to use it they would quickly tire of maintaining it.)  NP's need to be forced into maintenance. A party will force them to clean up, just as having a bunch of gifts to give will make them go out and get lots of gift wrap supplies. They like to do things all at once, when they're inspired. And this project is the easiest solution out there and they just might just have a shoe organizer lying around that they haven't bothered to get rid of yet.

Recap
This is a quick and easy option. It will work okay for an SJ as long as they go the extra mile and screw it into the closet. But since there is no good place for tissue paper and smoothed down gently used wrapping paper, this wouldn't be their best option. The SP will see why there is beauty in this option, but if they don't get around to screwing it to the wall it will bug them MORE than any other type. The NJ would be annoyed with all the attention to detail needed to keep this nice but an NP will buy all their supplies at once, so it will look good until they run low and are forced to get more stuff.

Will this Wrapping Station Work for You? #2

At PixiesDidIt!, we think life should be easy. As organization experts, we look for solutions that work for all types of people, whether they're naturally "messy" or "neat." We're qualified practitioners of the most popular personality assessment in the world — Myers Briggs — so we can tell you which ones will work for your type.

When it comes to home organization, we break the 16 Myers Briggs personality types into four major groups, NJ, NP, and SJ, SP. What unites us? We all need more space than we think.

This photo and link is from the lovely magazine, Country Living. We adore this solution as its bigger than the Martha Stewart solution in our last post, but could still fit inside a closet or a small room.

Will This Work for the SJ/Realistic Decision Maker?
These are the kind of ideas that SJ's thrive on.  And just like the Martha Stewart selection from the previous post, this would work (and has more space than the other one) if the SJ had either a dedicated craft/sewing room, a closet, or the back of closet door. The SJ is detail oriented and loves order, and as this solution has a space for everything and everything has a place, SJ's would do fine. The only caveats are:
  1. The color scheme is a bit funky, so SJ types with traditional design tastes might have trouble with it, in which case stick to the safer color choice in the Martha Stewart pegboard solution.
  2. There is a lot of stuff on the work surface which could bother an SJ. We would suggest tweaking this idea by storing everything that's on the desk in the drawers below, using drawer dividers when necessary.
  3. If anyone else in the household uses this space, you might consider adding labels so everyone will know how you expect it to be kept.
Will This Work for the SP/Adaptable Realist?
SPs are adaptable so they might do well with this solution. The bright colors might remind them of their travels and help them enjoy their craft space even more. But what's great about this solution versus the Martha Stewart one is the big basket of extra paper rolls. How much easier is it to dump a roll in the basket when you're done? The SP's wouldn't mind the "cluttered" look of all the open storage on top because it's much easier to put things away when they're right in front of you. But as adventurous as the SP's are, they're still overwhelmed by lots of visual details and would need a door or a curtain to close the space off from daily living. The only other problem for an SP is that they might have trouble making time for this project. Their biggest organizational weakness is that they would much rather be off buying the presents in Timbuktu than back home wrapping them.

Will this Work for the NJ/Visionary Decision Maker?
This looks like it was created by an NJ. It has vision and smart solutions that you couldn't find in a manufactured product (waste basket for paper rolls and the wooden dowels and cup holder hooks...ingenious!) NJ's are gifted with innovative ideas and the powerful follow through to make their vision real. It's their strongest organizational asset. This pegboard station could easily tuck into a corner of the kitchen as long as they didn't live with an S, who would find it too cluttered. But an N could easily live with all this detail out in the open as long as it wasn't say the focal point of the living room or kitchen. N's are always gathering new information, so they need a broadly organized solution, where putting something back doesn't have to be an exact science. This idea is perfect for them.

Will this Work for the NP/Adaptable Innovator?
It could, but it wouldn't be easy and since that's what we're all about, we can't send an NP to this project without an explicit warning....this project might take longer than you think! NPs are creative geniuses, but they are not skilled at judging time. There organizing strength as visual organizers mean that having everything on the wall in easy reach, looking good, is a dream come true. Unfortunately there are lots of details to this project which might frustrate an NP, like buying wooden dowels and cup hooks, and a peg coat rack, painting them all and then hanging them, oh whoops forgot about the pegboard, argh. Like an NJ they could have this station tucked away in the corner of a kitchen or study, but like an SP, they might get lost on the way to finishing it. There's got to be an easier way.

Recap
This wrapping station would work for an SJ who can dedicate a room or a closet to this solution and are ready for, or into this kind of colorful design. Adventuresome SPs will also like the solution, especially how easy it is to put things back, but the visual clutter might be too much as well, so a door or curtain is in order. This is the perfect solution for an NJ who has a corner in a room somewhere, or even above her current desk.  NPs will like the aesthetic of this solution but might have trouble with all the details in the follow through. Something better an easier exists for them out there and we will find it.

We hope this has been helpful and that you have recognized yourself in one of the four types we've described (both the weaknesses, but more importantly the strengths.) We welcome comments and ideas for posts so we can help fine tune our divining abilities and answer your most pressing organizational dilemmas. Will this Wrapping Station Work for You? #1

At PixiesDidIt!, we aim to make life easier for everyone. As home & life solution experts we're always looking for organizational solutions, so when we see something that looks amazing, we always ask, who will this work for? And because we are qualified practitioners of the most popular personality assessment in the world — Myers Briggs — we can tell you how a home organization solution will work for you and whether or not your life will be the easier for it.

For our first post of Will this Work for You?, we start with a link from the high priestess of home living, Martha Stewart.

When it comes to home organization, we break the 16 Myers Briggs personality types into four major groups, NJ, NP, and SJ, SP. What unites us? We all need more space than we think, or that is shown in this photo.

How Does It Work for an SJ
a.k.a. The Realistic Decision Maker
?
In general, Martha Stewart is the SJ solution personified, and while this is mostly true of her wrapping station, we don't think it's perfect for an SJ unless this peg board could be kept in a special room or hidden in a closet. Even with all these complimentary colors, it could pose as visual disturbance out in the open. For all their love of detail, SJ's don't really like seeing it. SJs can also have their particular way of doing a task ie. "the way its always been done" so this solution might not hold all their stuff, nor match, nor look as nice as Martha's. An SJ is also in danger of forgoing what makes this wrapping station so appealing — painting the pegboard a beautiful calming blue — because they might deem it a waste of time. SJ's are notorious for their brilliant yet utilitarian and unaesthetic solutions to home organization. So unless they are willing to follow this project to a T, the results might not be pretty.

How Does It Work for an SP
a.k.a. The Adaptable Realist?
Most Martha solutions have an SP's aesthetic flair. The blue is calming and the repetition of 3's with the wrapping paper rolls, tissue & scissors is just divine. It is both practical and beautiful, so, yes an SP could adapt to this solution. In the right spot, an SP could even have it out in the open, especially if wrapping presents wasn't their thing. If it was, we fear there wouldn't be enough space on this pegboard to accommodate all the details of wrapping presents that they adore. If they did make it bigger, it might look too cluttered. If size was the issue, we would suggest making three pegboards, one for each color scheme. The only other obstacle for an SP would be not getting around to making it.

How Does It Work for an NJ
a.k.a. The Visionary Decision Maker?
An NJ would never have a problem with finishing this project, and they would love that everything can be seen and grabbed because they are inherently visual organizers. And while NJ's can see beauty in the simple repetitive detail (3 scissors in 3 different sizes, 3 paper rolls, 3 tissue colors) it's probably too much detail for them to maintain easily. Even with their "get it done" attitude, they would quickly begin to resent their effort. An NJ would likely take this idea and tweak it to their specifications. The end result might not look as calming or clean as the Martha version but it would be attractive. Perhaps too cluttered for out in the open, but in a closet, behind a curtain or in a less trafficked room with a door? Brilliant.

How Does It Work for an NP
a.k.a. The Adaptable Innovator?
Oh how an NP is drawn to the idea of this detail oriented, practical solution. But for this to work, she would need:
1. Inspiration to take on the project in the first place.
2. A lot of time on her hands.
3. To label or draw outlines of the objects labeled right away, and not put it off until later because this has taken way longer than she thought it would.
4. A board that is three times the size of the one pictured because she has lots of paper supplies that have caught her fancy over the years but hasn't used because she usually sends gifts last minute from online stores and uses their gift wrap, and she has the new coordinating blue paper she bought just for this project.
Its not out of the realm of possibilities that all four elements will be in place and her answer to Martha's pegboard will be a fantastic innovation warranting at least a post on a design blog, but the NP should not feel guilty if she never gets around to doing it. This project is NOT EASY and since we strive to help people have easier lives, we think there is a simpler way to store your gift wrap supplies.

So. Recap. Will work best with SP's who have enough wrapping to warrant a peg board, but not too much that it won't hold all the supplies, and for SJ's who have the space to hang this pegboard out of constant sight and are comfortable staying within the strict confines of this small, yet beautiful solution! NJ's can't help but make it their own unique, somewhat cluttered creation that would be perfect behind closed doors and NP's will have trouble starting and/or finishing what, if inspired, they will make their own, otherwise, hold out for something easier.

We hope this has been helpful and that you have recognized yourself in one of the four types we've described (the weaknesses but also the strengths!) We know that their are exceptions to the rule, but these are general descriptions — there are 16 different types — so if you want more specific personality based organization help give us an email info@pixiesdidit.com and we can provide you with an online Myers Briggs personality assessment.
